THE COST OF SUCCESS

The Cost of Success

successEverything worth having comes at a price. There are some who only see value in $ dollar amounts, but everything has value. Your time, your attention, your effort, your ideas, your abilities, your talents, or a compliment you give to someone… all these things have value. Even your presence is valuable. People will pay you just to sit in a seat and do nothing. I feel that my time is the most valuable thing to me.

It’s said that about 300 people move to Los Angeles every day, and in spending the last 2 years living in Hollywood and downtown Los Angeles, I believe I have a candid view into the mindset/lifestyle of the average person who are pursing their dreams. I know that not everyone wants to be a celebrity, that even includes some celebrities… however I feel most people, if not everyone, want to be Successful or find Happiness in life (I think sometimes those two words can be interchangeable). And why not? It’s the American dream, no I’m being serious. Most people don’t realize that our country’s Declaration of Independence charges us to pursue happiness.

“We hold these truths to be sacred & undeniable; that all men are created equal & independent, that from that equal creation they derive rights inherent & inalienable, among which are the preservation of life, & liberty, & the pursuit of happiness; …”

Barbara Walters and daughterRecently, Barbara Walters made the decision to retire from her long successful career in news & television. Last night I was able to watch a documentary of her life story and career (if you haven’t seen it, please watch it), and it was interesting to hear her speak on the things she values most, which by the way was her family. She said this in an interview…

Barbara Walters – “And, you know, on your deathbed, are you going to say, ‘I wish I spent more time in the office?’ No. You’ll say, ‘I wish I spent more time with my family,’ and I do feel that way. I wish I had spent more time with my Jackie.”

Family… Family is one of the most heartfelt topics that anyone can discuss. The relationship you have with those who you consider a part of your family is essentially tied to your heart and your emotions. Barbara Walters interviewed celebrities and discussed their family and children, and here are a few quotes from those interviews. And, Whoopi Goldberg gave a real heartfelt true quote on the cost of her success, and what it meant to her family. It all just validates my feelings on the importance of family and real love. Life is a balancing act when it comes to your family & your career/dreams, and there aren’t rights or wrongs, it’s only decisions and repercussions.

Richard Dreyfuss – “I guess I never knew until my children were born, that I could love anyone more than I could love myself, or love my work.”

Angelina Jolie – “It’s an amazing thing to take care of a child; and have that child love you and trust you, and it makes me feel that I somehow have a purpose.”

Whoopi Goldberg – “…I have guilty pains, because in my mind good parents would never leave their children. And, I wish I could say that I wish I had done it differently, but damn it, I wouldn’t have. This was my shot. I got a shot and I took it, and a lot of people paid the price for it, but no one more than my kid
